Ice Bears Hockey: Chasing a National Title, Celebrating a Legend
The Missouri State Ice Bears are right where they want to be, and right where the pressure is highest. Ranked 21st nationally, the Ice Bears enter a crucial weekend of must-win conference games against Colorado, with a spot in the 24-team ACHA National Tournament in St. Louis on the line. Head Coach Tom Winkler joined the show to break down what it will take to finish strong, emphasizing physical play, disciplined puck movement, and aggressive net-front presence as the keys to surviving the grind of the Western Collegiate Hockey League.

That grind is no joke. The WCHL is widely regarded as one of the toughest conferences in collegiate hockey, featuring perennial powerhouses like defending national champion UNLV. Every night feels like playoff hockey, and Winkler made it clear that success at this level isn’t just about talent, it’s about preparation, toughness, and execution when the margins are razor-thin. With postseason hopes hanging in the balance, the Ice Bears know there’s no room for slip-ups.
But this season is about more than wins and rankings, it’s about legacy. As the program celebrates its 25th anniversary, longtime founder Stan Melton is being honored with induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Often called the “Godfather of Hockey” in Springfield, Melton’s vision transformed a club dream into a respected, competitive program with national relevance. His journey, sparked by a snowy trip to a Kansas City Blues game, helped lay the foundation for a quarter-century of Ice Bears hockey.
That legacy extends well beyond the rink. Under Melton’s influence and Winkler’s leadership, the Ice Bears have built a culture rooted in character, accountability, and service. The program recently swept the ACHA Community Service Awards at both the Division I and Division III levels, reinforcing a “family first, school second, hockey third” philosophy that prioritizes developing strong citizens alongside strong players.
As collegiate hockey continues to evolve, with ACHA expansion, NCAA rule changes, and shifting recruiting dynamics, Missouri State’s Ice Bears remain a model of stability and purpose. From national tournament ambitions to honoring the people who built the program, this season reflects exactly what Ice Bears hockey has stood for over the last 25 years: excellence on the ice, pride in the community, and a legacy that continues to grow.
