The Rise of Rugby: Meet the Southern Missouri Goonies
A new sport is gaining traction in the Ozarks, and it’s bringing a global culture with it. The Southern Missouri Goonies are officially launching as the area’s first high school rugby team, opening the door for boys from across the 417, freshmen through seniors, to experience one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Because rugby is still new to the region, every athlete starts on equal footing, making it the perfect opportunity for curious competitors ready to try something different.

The “Southern Missouri” name is intentional. Rather than representing a single school, the Goonies unite players from multiple communities under one banner, building camaraderie across town lines. Practices officially kick off February 3rd at Allison Sports Town, with indoor workouts helping the team get rolling despite winter weather. Early training focuses on conditioning, fundamentals, and introducing players to the unique flow of the game.
So what makes rugby different? For starters, the ball itself. Its unpredictable shape keeps play dynamic, while the rule allowing players to run forward but pass backward creates nonstop movement and strategy. With no pads, rugby emphasizes proper technique and conditioning over brute force. Modern tackling methods prioritize safety, and the sport’s nonstop pace builds elite cardio, making it a natural fit for wrestlers, basketball players, soccer players, and anyone looking for a serious physical challenge.
Beyond the field, rugby offers something rare: a worldwide fraternity. Post-match traditions often include shared meals, conversations, and mutual respect between opponents, creating lifelong connections that stretch far beyond the scoreboard. The Springfield Rugby Club, founded in 1983, has long been part of that culture, and its history is even documented in the free YouTube film American Rugby Rising: Club Rugby in Springfield, Missouri. With a packed schedule ahead, including a multi-state Jamboree and upcoming “friendly” matches, the Southern Missouri Goonies aren’t just starting a team. They’re building a movement, and the Ozarks are invited to be part of it. Learn more at their website HERE.
