Ozarks Legend Mike Keltner: Coaching, Psychology, and the Mid-Range Game
For 15 seasons at Glendale High School, Mike Keltner built more than a winning program, he built a standard. With a 311–131 record and Hall of Fame credentials, Keltner became one of the Ozarks’ most respected voices in basketball. In our conversation, he turns that insight toward the current challenges facing the Missouri State Bears, breaking down why close losses often come down to finishing plays, free throw execution, rebounding, and the mental toughness required to close out tight games. Losing streaks, he explains, are rarely about effort, they’re about precision under pressure.

Keltner also dives into the evolution of the game itself. Comparing the old Valley grind to the pace and spacing of Conference USA, he makes a compelling case for the lost art of the mid-range jumper. While modern offenses lean heavily on the three-ball, Kellner argues that balance and the ability to score at all three levels, still defines winning teams. Fundamentals, consistency, and composure remain the difference-makers, no matter the era.
At Glendale, Keltner started youth camps as early as third grade, investing in skill development and basketball IQ long before varsity lights turned on. The results were staggering: all 54 seniors who played under him graduated and earned college degrees. He credits bright, dedicated kids, supportive parents, and a tight-knit community for creating something truly special. Today, in his role within Kinesiology at Missouri State, he continues mentoring young coaches across Southwest Missouri, many of whom are building successful programs of their own.
From electrifying nights at McDonald Arena during his Hillcrest playing days to the rising coaching career of his son-in-law, Drew Richards at UNC Pembroke, Keltner’s passion for the game remains unmistakable. Retirement hasn’t dulled that fire, it’s simply shifted his impact. Whether breaking down the psychology of a last-minute possession or celebrating former players thriving in business and corporate leadership, Mike Keltner‘s story is ultimately about growth, discipline, and the enduring power of doing things the right way.
