Nixa Girls Wrestling Builds a Dynasty with Back-to-Back State Titles
The Nixa Girls Wrestling program has quickly become one of the most dominant forces in Missouri high school sports, capturing back-to-back state championships and building what many are now calling a true wrestling dynasty. Head Coach Dustin Martin credits the team’s success to a strong foundation built by early trailblazers in the program, especially athletes like Kendall Young, who helped normalize girls wrestling in its early days and proved the sport belonged on the same stage as any other. From the start, Nixa’s administration and community backed the program fully, treating girls wrestling with the same support and expectations as every other sport, giving the Eagles a critical head start as the sport exploded in popularity across the state.

One of the most inspiring moments of the championship run came from senior Natalie Edmisson, whose unexpected state title win helped secure the team championship. Considered a “dark horse” heading into the tournament, Edmisson’s determination and resilience showcased the depth and grit of the Nixa roster. Coach Martin says moments like that are what define championship teams, not just star athletes, but competitors willing to rise when their team needs them most.
The program’s success also comes from a deliberate approach to development. Nixa regularly schedules some of the toughest competition in Missouri to challenge its wrestlers and prepare them for the postseason. The Eagles also benefit from the largest youth wrestling program in the state, with more than 230 kids from ages 5 through eighth grade learning the fundamentals. With new facilities and year-round opportunities, including freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, the pipeline of future Eagles continues to grow stronger every season.
Coach Martin also highlighted how the sport itself has evolved. Modern wrestling now focuses on science-backed weight management and athlete health, with regulations from the Missouri State High School Activities Association ensuring safe practices. Meanwhile, Nixa continues to build strong rivalries, especially with nearby Willard, while also celebrating alumni success, including former Eagle Zan Fugit, now an All-American wrestler competing at Wisconsin and potentially eyeing a future in MMA. From grassroots youth programs to national-level competition, Nixa wrestling shows no signs of slowing down.
