The spotlight is on Hillcrest junior Kyrese Simpson, who is closing in on becoming the all-time leading scorer in Springfield Public Schools history. Simpson has been the offensive engine for Hillcrest this season, but he’s far from doing it alone. The Hornets bring a talented and energetic roster into the championship game, including rising 6’6″ standout Javon Jones, senior leader James Collins, and promising young contributors like Kaivon Alexander and Derek Daley. With a previous win over Carl Junction already this season, Hillcrest enters the rematch confident but ready for a physical battle.
Head Coach Jordan Fielding, a Hillcrest alumnus, says the program’s success goes deeper than talent. The Hornets pride themselves on a tight-knit, family culture that has been built through generations of coaches and players. Fielding credits mentors like longtime coach Steve Jenkins and the late Ryan Shaw for helping shape the program’s identity and his own coaching philosophy.
If Hillcrest can capture the district title, the Hornets will advance to the state quarterfinals and continue what has already been a memorable season. With Simpson chasing history and a young roster hungry for more, Hillcrest’s playoff run is quickly becoming one of the most exciting stories in local basketball.
