Kickapoo’s State Quarterfinal Test: Mitch McHenry Breaks Down the Game Plan
As the postseason heats up across Missouri, the Kickapoo Chiefs are preparing for one of their toughest tests yet, a Class 6 State Quarterfinal showdown with powerhouse Rockhurst. Kickapoo head coach Mitch McHenry joined The Starting Lineup to break down what goes into preparing for a matchup like this, and it’s clear the Chiefs aren’t leaving anything to chance. With an unusual week-long break before the game, McHenry says the team has had extra time to dive deep into film study, dissecting Rockhurst’s strengths and tendencies to craft a detailed game plan.
🎧 Hear the full conversation with Coach Mitch McHenry and the complete breakdown of Kickapoo’s postseason strategy:
That level of preparation is part of a bigger philosophy that has shaped Kickapoo’s season. McHenry intentionally schedules tough opponents and competitive tournaments, even traveling outside the area, to ensure his team is battle-tested when playoff basketball arrives. One of the most important moments of the season came at the prestigious Tournament of Champions, where Kickapoo started 0–3 but used the experience as a turning point. The lessons learned during that stretch helped fuel a remarkable 15-game winning streak and gave the team the confidence it needed heading into the postseason.
Leadership has also been a major factor in the Chiefs’ success. Senior point guard Reese Kimrey, the Springfield City Player of the Year, has been the engine that drives Kickapoo’s offense. Known for his high basketball IQ, unselfish play, and reliable shooting, Kimrey has been a four-year varsity standout. But perhaps just as important was how the team responded when he briefly missed time this season, proving the Chiefs have the depth and confidence to step up when needed.
The program’s culture runs even deeper than the players on the court. McHenry also spoke about the unique dynamic of coaching alongside his father, longtime assistant coach Denny McHenry. The two share a passion for the game but bring different strengths to the bench. While Mitch focuses on strategy and preparation, Denny is known for connecting with every player in the program, even those at the end of the bench, helping build the team-first mindset that defines Kickapoo basketball.
With a challenging Rockhurst team waiting in the quarterfinals, the Chiefs know the road ahead won’t be easy. But between meticulous preparation, experienced leadership, and a culture built on playing hard and playing together, Kickapoo believes it’s ready for the moment.
