SEC Champs to Sweet 16: Hogs’ March Madness Outlook with Inside Arkansas
The Arkansas Razorbacks are heading into March Madness with serious momentum after a historic weekend. In our latest exclusive segment, John Neighbors from Inside Arkansas Sports joined us to break down the team’s recent SEC victory and what lies ahead in the NCAA tournament. Presented by Safe Haven Bath.
For the first time in 26 years, the Arkansas Razorbacks are SEC tournament champions. Despite entering the tournament with a double-bye and concerns about potential “rust,” the team proved they were ready to play, taking care of business against Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt. As Neighbors noted, while some critics may point to their path, the trophy simply says “SEC Tournament Champions,” providing a significant “feather in the cap” for the team and Coach Cal heading into the national tournament.
Despite their conference success, the Hogs received what many consider a tough draw. As a four seed, the team faces a quick turnaround with a midday game this Thursday in Portland, Oregon. Neighbors expressed frustration over the logistics, noting that other SEC teams like Missouri, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt received much closer regional assignments.
Arkansas also finds itself in the same region as Arizona, which Neighbors considers one of the toughest squads in the country.
First Round Matchup: Hawaii
Arkansas kicks off their tournament run against Hawaii. While Hawaii boasts a starting lineup with significant height—featuring players ranging from 6’6″ to 7’0″—Neighbors believes Arkansas’s skill and talent will ultimately offset the size disadvantage.
Key factors for an Arkansas victory on Thursday include:
– Darius Acuff’s Leadership: As the hottest guard currently playing, Acuff remains the engine of the Razorback offense.
– Trevan Brazil’s Versatility: Brazil’s ability to play like a guard despite his 6’10” frame and massive wingspan will be crucial. Neighbors believes a “double-double” performance from Brazil virtually guarantees a win.
– Supporting Cast Contributions: The Hogs need continued strong play from Malik Thomas, Billy Richmond, and DJ Wagner, the latter of whom Neighbors praised for embracing his role as a sixth man this season.
Tournament Outlook
Arkansas has reached the Sweet 16 in four of the last five years. With the team currently undefeated in the month of March and playing their best basketball, there is high optimism for another deep run. Neighbors even went so far as to predict an Arkansas national championship in his bracket, alongside a Final Four featuring Michigan, UConn, and Florida.
