Scott McGee’s Next Inning: A Bittersweet Farewell to Willard Baseball
After years at the helm, Scott McGee is stepping into a new chapter, transitioning from Willard’s dugout into an administrative role with Republic School District following his final season leading the program. The decision comes with a mix of purpose and emotion. McGee says the move is rooted in a desire to pursue school administration more fully, gain a wider perspective of education, and be present as a “dad first” during his son’s collegiate baseball journey.
We’re tossing the mic over to Coach McGee to talk what he’s doing next:
Leaving behind Willard Tigers isn’t easy for McGee, who has helped shape the program into one of the most consistent forces in Southwest Missouri baseball. The Tigers aren’t just reloading, they’re built to sustain success, led by a deep roster featuring 12 seniors, five returning starters, and emerging underclassmen like Jackson Redd. Standout talent continues to anchor the program, including top pitcher Levi Hilton and standout shortstop Cade Hayter, both of whom are expected to continue their careers at the collegiate level.
At the center of Willard’s identity is more than just wins, it’s culture. McGee points to a system built from the ground up, where K–12 development, community support, and youth programs have created what many around the area call a true baseball “dynasty.” Events like the annual Willard Lead-Off Tournament, now celebrating its 30th year in a new turf facility, continue to bring schools together and showcase the program’s depth, tradition, and energy every spring. As McGee moves into his next role, his message is clear: success in baseball, and in life, is about building people first, with the wins following naturally.
