From Gold Medals to the Garden City: Why Ryan Lochte is Joining Missouri State
The Missouri State swimming and diving staff just got a major hardware upgrade.
In a move that caught even Head Coach Dave Collins off guard—who initially thought he was being pranked—12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte is officially joining the Bears’ coaching staff for the upcoming season.
But the question everyone is asking is: Why Springfield?
Finding a Home in the 417
While Lochte’s legendary career has taken him to podiums across the globe, his move to Missouri is rooted in something much more personal than sports. For over a year, Ryan has been a frequent visitor to the Ozarks, visiting his girlfriend, Molly, and her family.
“Every time I went there, it just felt like home,” Lochte shared. Beyond the personal ties, he noted that the local lifestyle—and specifically the food scene—won him over.
A Family-First Move
For Lochte, Springfield offers something his previous home base of Gainesville, Florida, was missing: a massive variety of activities for his kids. From the proximity to Branson and theme parks to local bowling alleys and family-friendly attractions, the move was a win for his life outside the pool.
Bringing the Olympic Edge to MSU
While his personal life brought him to town, his passion for coaching is what will keep him on the pool deck. For the past few years, Lochte has been traveling the world hosting swim clinics and private lessons.
Now, Missouri State athletes will have the unique opportunity to learn from one of the greatest technical swimmers in history. Lochte says he has found a “niche” for coaching, and he’s ready to bring that expertise to the men’s and women’s teams next year.
Go Bears!
