From Nixa to the U: Jackson Cantwell on the “Pro” Reality of College Football
Transitioning from high school to a major Division I football program is a challenge few truly understand, but Jackson Cantwell is living it. After graduating from Nixa early last December, the 17-year-old standout jumped straight into spring drills with the University of Miami Hurricanes—a move he describes as a crash course in becoming a “pro”.
In a recent interview during a visit back to the Ozarks, Jackson reflected on the sheer speed and athleticism of the college game. Going from local competition to facing first-round NFL draft picks on the scout team was a wake-up call. “You got to be able to be a pro,” Jackson noted, emphasizing the discipline required to be self-sufficient in Miami.
Despite the intense training schedule, Jackson is excelling both on and off the field. A finance major with a head start thanks to 26 college credit hours earned in high school, he is on track to be a “three and out” student-wide. He also settled the jersey number debate: after a brief stint in a different number that caught the internet’s attention, he has officially reclaimed his signature #79.
With Miami’s recent success in the transfer portal and a “physical brand of ball” becoming the team’s identity, Jackson is confident about the future. While he misses the Midwest hospitality, he’s fully focused on the Hurricanes’ goal of returning to the national championship stage.
