With his basketball eligibility officially wrapped up, Big Mike is trading in his sneakers for cleats to suit up for the Missouri State football team.

It turns out that folks have been whispering in Big Mike’s ear about football since his junior year. Standing tall as the powerhouse center for the Bears, his foot quickness and pure physical presence had everyone thinking he would be an absolute menace on the gridiron. After seeking out advice from mentors and coaches, he officially made the leap. The wildest part? He has never played a single down of organized football in his life.

Crashing the Line or Catching Rebounds in the Endzone

Where exactly will we see Big Mike pull up on Saturdays? The Missouri State coaching staff is currently looking at him for defensive end, defensive tackle, and tight end. While learning a completely new sport is a massive undertaking, Big Mike is already out on the turf getting his head in the dirt and mastering his stance. When we asked him about adjusting to catching a football, he gave us the ultimate basketball answer: “It’s basically just grabbing a rebound, just a different object.”

Getting Over Mom’s Football Ban

So, why didn’t a powerhouse athlete like Big Mike play football back home in the Chicago area? Simple: his mother wouldn’t let him. According to Mike, she was totally against it. While she is still working out the details and trying to get over that hump, she knows what her son can do in Springfield. It also helps that Mike has the ultimate backing from his basketball mentor, Coach Cuonzo Martin, who strongly encouraged him to take this opportunity and see how far it can go.

From Vincennes to a 100,000-Seat Stage

Big Mike’s rugged style of play was forged at Vincennes, one of the premier junior college basketball programs in the nation. He brought that “dog-eat-dog” mentality to Missouri State, dominating opponents with a perfected back-to-the-basket jump hook. Now, he’s ready to channel that exact same physicality on a massive stage. Assuming he locks into the roster, his first true taste of college football action will come at Kyle Field when the Bears open up the season against Texas A&M in front of over 103,000 screaming fans.
