Longtime head coach and current Missouri State assistant coach Sparky Woods joined us in the studio to talk about his transition to Springfield, working under his son—new Bears head coach Casey Woods—and what it takes to build a winning program in the modern era of the sport.

From George Welsh to the Ozarks

Falling in Love with Springfield

While Sparky had heard of regional landmarks like Branson before making the move, he admits he hadn’t spent real time in the Queen City of the Ozarks. It didn’t take long for him and his family to fall completely in love with the area. From taking the grandkids through local caves and riding the attractions at Silver Dollar City to enjoying dinner where they throw the rolls at you, the Woods family has fully immersed themselves in the Springfield community. Sparky noted that the city offers all the accessories of a major metropolitan area but keeps that welcoming, close-knit small-town feeling.

Coaching Under His Son in the Modern Era

One of the most fascinating dynamics of this new Missouri State staff is the relationship between Sparky and his son, Casey. After retired life in Birmingham, Sparky was called back to the sidelines when Casey accepted the head coaching job. While Sparky leaves the high-tempo offensive scheme to Casey, he has taken on significant responsibilities with the special teams unit. He also gave us a candid look at how much the game has changed, noting that dealing with the modern environment of NIL, the transfer portal, and packed June OTA schedules makes college football look like a brand-new job compared to his early days.

Blanketing the State of Missouri

We made sure to ask Coach Woods about the statement Casey made during his introductory press conference, promising that the Bears would “blanket the state of Missouri” and visit every single county. Sparky confirmed that it wasn’t just talk; the coaching staff has actively been out on the road working tirelessly to put a fence around in-state talent. With a grueling upcoming schedule that includes a massive road test at Texas A&M, the Bears are working through the hot summer days to ensure they’re ready to make the community proud.
