As part of our Ozarks Legend series, we caught up with former Missouri State University football coach Terry Allen live from O’Hare airport during his family vacation. From the wild modern era of college athletics to his legendary time coaching a future NFL Hall of Famer at Northern Iowa, Terry dropped by to share incredible memories of his time right here in Southwest Missouri.

The Wild West of NIL and Conference Realignment

We jumped right into the hot-button issues changing the landscape of the sports world today. Terry didn’t hold back on his thoughts regarding the transfer portal and NIL, calling the current day-to-day recruiting demands “a mess to be honest with you guys.” He expressed deep concern over the possibility of the Big Ten and SEC breaking away to form their own organization, noting that traditional college football is missing the boat on realistic structure. According to Terry, the current financial free-for-all threatens the historic rivalries and bowl games fans grew up loving.

Benching Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams Connection

Of course, Ned and Scott had to bring up one of the most famous pieces of football trivia: Terry keeping future Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner on the bench for three seasons at UNI. Terry joked about the “setup question” but reminded us that he had a spectacular three-year starter in Jay Johnson ahead of Warner at the time. He walked us down memory lane, describing how Warner went from stocking shelves at Hy-Vee to refining his lightning-fast release in Arena Football before setting the NFL on fire with the St. Louis Rams.

Missouri State’s Leap to FBS and Conference USA

Turning the focus back to Springfield, we discussed Missouri State University making the monumental jump to the FBS level in Conference USA. Terry praised the move, highlighting that a metropolitan area the size of Springfield has the hardcore fan base required to pack the stands. He expects that the transition will continue to spark needed facility upgrades and bring a profound sense of pride back to Southwest Missouri football.

Family Ties and Nixa Traditions

Personally, Terry looks back at his time in Nixa as the absolute best move his family ever made. We shared laughs about his legendary local Super Bowl parties and watching 4th of July fireworks from his backyard deck. He also gave a proud update on his family: his son Alex is working in the Cedar Falls area, and his daughter Angie is now the deputy commissioner of the Big West Athletic Conference, living in a “gated community” at Camp Pendleton with her recon marine instructor husband.
