We had a fantastic guest join us on the air this morning as former Kickapoo Chiefs standout pitcher and incoming Missouri State Bears recruit Brody Wilson stopped by the studio. Standing at 6’4″ and 230 pounds, Brody was a force to be reckoned with in Springfield Public Schools (SPS) sports, starring as both a dominant arm on the diamond and an outstanding tight end on the gridiron. With the Major League Baseball draft looming this weekend, we caught up with the local phenom to talk pre-draft workouts, his explosive developmental jump, and his lifelong dream of wearing the maroon and white.

The Pre-Draft Buzz and a Complete Game Masterpiece

With the MLB draft spanning 20 rounds this weekend, Brody recently returned from a pre-draft workout where he threw a bullpen session in front of area scouts. While he stays relaxed under pressure, his performance on the field speaks for itself. We looked back at his absolute gem of a performance against Blue Springs South—a complete-game victory in front of the largest crowd he had ever seen at Kickapoo. Knowing that Blue Springs South went on to win the state championship only sweetens the milestone for the hometown pitcher.

The Junior Year Velocity Spike

Brody wasn’t always a lock to be a division-one pitcher. In fact, going into his junior year, he held more college offers for football than baseball, topping out at just 83 MPH as a sophomore. However, a dedicated summer program with the Athletics, a specialized throwing routine using weighted balls, and intense strength training completely changed his trajectory. His velocity skyrocketed, transforming him from a high school dual-sport athlete into a high-priority arm for MSU assistant coach Joey Hawkins.

Keeping It in the Family

Arm care is everything for a young pitcher, and Brody happens to have an expert in his own household. His father, Dr. Vic Wilson, is a noted sports orthopedic surgeon in the area specializing in shoulders and elbows. While Brody laughs that his dad mostly stays out of the mechanical coaching side, having a direct line for elite arm care advice and recovery tips is a massive advantage as he prepares for the collegiate level.

A Lifelong Dream at Route 66 Stadium

Brody is staying right here in Springfield to pitch for the Missouri State Bears. He shared a great story with us about finding a picture of himself in the MSU locker room when he was just six years old. While he will operate strictly as a pitcher-only (PO) in college—despite hitting four home runs and batting just under .300 at first base this spring—he is incredibly eager to step onto the mound at Route 66 Stadium and travel the country with the Bears.
